Aloha! Renowned Kumu Hula Meleana Manuel from Volcano, Hawai’i, returned to Lodge 70 for the 8th time to teach hula workshops on March 11 and perform a Hawaiian music concert on March 13. A “kumu hula” is an officially recognized teacher of Hawaiian dance whose expertise includes dances of ancient and modern times; Hawaiian history and language; and cultural protocols. Kumu Mele is an exemplary dancer and instructor who graciously shares her knowledge and the deep meanings of Hawaiian songs. She opened a branch of her hula school (hālau) in Cupertino at Lodge 70 last March, led by Sister Karen Sanico.
